Fashion Prism.
On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the friendship city relationship between Shanghai and Milan, the participation of East China Normal University and Shanghai University of Engineering Science in the “Talent to Talent 2024” event serves as a tribute to the profound friendship between the two cities, while looking forward to broader cooperation in the future.
The Shanghai fashion show, themed “Fashion Prism”, employs the multifaceted and refractive qualities of the prism to metaphorically represent the diverse fashion concepts showcased by the two institutions. These encompass the Chinese philosophical concept of “round sky and square earth” (Tian Yuan Di Fang), the mathematical aesthetics of the golden ratio, reflections on contemporary issues such as social distance. The show presents a prismatic expression filled with color and variety by ingenious combinations of various elements, colors, and materials while at the same time deeply intertwining fashion and culture. It also reflects the “Shanghai Spirit” of open-mindedness, inclusiveness, cultural diversity, and pursuit of excellence.
As one of the higher education institutions, Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) integrates and coordinates engineering, economics, management, art, design, and other disciplines. SUES is one of the first batches of pilot universities under the Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program of Ministry of Education, the pioneer of Emerging Engineering Education and High-level Application-oriented Universities in Shanghai.
The three campuses of SUES, Songjiang, Changning, and Hongkou. SUES has established the following schools/colleges: School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, School of Management Studies, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Art and Design, International Institute of Creative Design, School of Air Transportation (School of Flying), School of Textiles and Fashion, School of Urban Railway Transportation, School of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics, School of Foreign Languages, School of Marxism, College of International Education, College of Continuing Education, Higher Vocational and Technical College, Department of Physical Education, Engineering Training Center, General Education Center, as well as the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center and National University Science Park.
The School of Textiles and Fashion is a college that focuses on textile and clothing engineering technology, with multiple disciplines, such as art design and management, developing in a coordinated manner. It is a national first-class and Shanghai first-class undergraduate majors’ construction unit, an international engineering education Accreditation college, and boasts fully English-taught programs, vocational school-through-to-university, and high school-through-to-university programs. The college always adheres to the educational purpose of relying on textile industry and Shanghai’s modern industries to serve social and economic development. Led by outstanding engineering education, it constructs the “three collaborative models” educational philosophy of “collaborative education, collaborative school-running, and collaborative innovation ” with the industry, cultivating high-quality applied talents with solid professional knowledge and practical abilities in the field of textile and clothing, as well as international perspective, innovation awareness, and team spirit.
The college provides a comprehensive range of degree programs in the field of textile science and engineering. The college has four departments, including Textile Engineering Department, Fashion Design and Engineering Department, Fashion Art Department, and Fashion Design and Communication Department. In terms of undergraduate programs, the college provides a total of five majors, including Fashion Design and Engineering, Textile Engineering, Fashion and Apparel Design, Performing, and Non-woven Materials and Engineering. It offers a master’s degree program in the first-level discipline of Textile Science and Engineering, and Master’s Degree programs available in the second-level disciplines such as Textile Engineering, Textile Materials, Textile Chemistry and Dyeing & Finishing Engineering, Fashion Design and Engineering, and Fashion Industry Economy and Management. Additionally, Professional Master’s Degree programs are offered in Materials and Chemical Engineering-Advanced Fiber Materials and Ecological Functionalization and Design-Fashion & Art Design.
In recent years, the college has actively promoted international cooperation and successively established close cooperation and exchange relationships with prestigious universities in France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and other countries. It has carried out the “3+1” double degree program with NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano, Italy, the “3+X” master’s program with North Carolina State University in the United States, and the“3+1”double degree program with MODART INTERNATIONAL. At the same time, the college has actively participated in various large-scale fashion shows, performances, and creative activities in society, and hosted a number of domestic design competitions and model competitions. Its students have repeatedly won various awards in domestic and international fashion design and fashion show competitions. The college has also established solid strategic alliances with many groups, companies, and industrial clusters in Shanghai and surrounding areas, and its educational achievements have been well-received by all sectors of society.

Capsule collection title: A Round Sky, A Square Earth
Concept collection: This project is inspired by the ancient Chinese philosophy of “A Round Sky, A Square Earth”, which is the ancient Chinese people’s initial understanding of the universe, and later developed into an important idea of traditional Chinese culture. Through researching various buildings in China, I found that the concept of “A Round Sky, A Square Earth” permeates the layout and style of some architectural structures, from the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven to the Temple of Earth, and even the smallest residential houses have this meaningful beauty of form and mood, so I focused on buildings with these characteristics for this project, and explored the variation of the garments’ patterns. According to research, after trying to abstract the basic pattern into square and circle, I focused on the representative building – the courtyard as a reference and extracted the pattern.
Although the courtyards in the building are independently regulated from each other, the people living in them are able to be in close contact with each other and have an atmosphere of reunion, so I have extracted two experimental versions of each based on this unique pattern of closed but connected courtyards:
One is that the four sides are called square earth, and the doors and windows are all open to the courtyard to symbolize the round sky. The second is that the overall structure of the building is square as the square earth, and the courtyards are closed as a round sky. I used these patterns to combine with each other and experimented with different connection methods, but the same thing is that when placed on the mannequin, the pattern with a circle in the square is always there. When the connection method changes, the relationship between the circle and the square will also change from 2D to 3D. For the color part, The Temple of Heaven worships the sky, the glazed tiles on the building are blue, the temple of earth worships the earth, and the glazed tiles on the building are yellow.
